If an error message "Incorrect user name or password entered" is reported when submitting self assessment tax returns online using the 'File by Internet' (FBI) feature of the software, the likely cause is that one of the following has been entered incorrectly:
- Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
- Gateway User ID
- Gateway Password
If the User ID and Password are working when logging on the HMRC website, it is very likely that the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) that you have entered in the software is incorrect. The File By Internet (FBI) submission routine will start and immediately display a 'Submit Error' response and you get an error message "Incorrect user name or password entered". When you click the 'Show error' button it will display "Fatal Gateway Error 1046 Authentication Failure. The supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service."
Check to ensure that the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), Gateway User ID and Gateway Password are all correct and attempt the submission again.
